  • Time (history) has been recorded far longer than that, but if you mean when did our calender start, it is the birth of Jesus. AD, means "in the year of our Lord." However, it is my understanding that most historians don't believe that Jesus was born in the year 0.
  • In addition to what Mr. Josh wrote, the world wide accepted dating system now calls the current counting of years the "Current Era" or the "Common Era" and the previous one the "Before Current" or "Before Common" era. I suppose so that we will be politically correct and not offend someone. BC and AD were supposed to be Before Christ and AdDeum but that was deemed too religious. And, like he said, no one knows the actual year. Could be 4 years off. And, some say as much as 10.
  • History records the birth of Christ in year 0, although records may push the exact date as far backs as 4BC.
  • The use of the letters A D (Anno Domini = year of our lord) and B C (Before Common era, not before Christ) came into use many hundred of years after the supposed birth and death of Jesus. They were made up by people trying to make a connection to our current calendar with the existence of Jesus. A Roman calendar was in use by most people in the time that Jesus may have lived, and he and his family would have used the less popular Jewish calendar.
