Why is the phrase "Don't get cute" used to warn someone about how they are behaving?

I think it comes from the whole kids being innocent and cute so they can get away with murder. At least that's what I mean when I say it. When you say it to an adult, you both know that you are old enough to be responsible for your decisions, so when you try to act innocent and like a victim, its an insult. Kids can be as smartass as they want with no repercussions, because they are supposedly cute and naive.
