Why is worshipping statues or idols forbidden in judaism? what if one does pray before an idol, is that apostasy, according to judaism?

    We tried that once. Chet ha'Egel (חטא העגל). It didn't work out at all.

    The first two of our Ten Sayings make it abundantly clear that this is not ever to be done again.

    The first two of the Ten Commandments (the bedrock of Judaism) are: 1) I am the L-rd, your G-d 2) You shall have no other gods besides me.


    Shortly after that, the Torah cotinues that a Jew may not make any graven images.

    There are a number of famous instances when the Jewish nation did serve idols and were punished for it, not least of which is the infamous "golden calf".
