  • While I cannot be certain of it's origin, I can take a guess where it originated from. To be a "sweet talker" is an informal way of saying that someone is heaping too much praise or espressing too much flattery. It's a way to get what one wants by great praise. In the example, "Sally always gets what she wants because she can sweet talk her father into anything." Another term is to "sugar coat" something. That means to put a light spin on things or to pretty them up maybe beyond what they really are in harsh reality. It seems that a sweet talker and a person who sugar coats things are both doing it to get something, a means to an end. So if you take those two idioms, being a sweet talker, the origin of the term "sweet talker" could come from someone who just puts sugar talk on things in order to get what they want.
