Question

Help answer this question below.

I am not a big believer in Spirits but is it possible that dogs do see them. My dog will just wake up & start barking at air in his "scared to death" bark. I have heard people say similar stories. Maybe I am stupid but is it possible?

I absolutely believe they can see spirits or things we cannot. My cat does it too. He will stare and hold a defensive posture in a direction where there is sometimes nothing but a wall. Never a bug or anything in between. Scares the crap out of me!

Then again, I knew I had something of a paranormal nature going on in my house soon after I bought it. I have since taken care of that situation, by having a conversation with the spirit (previous owner's dead mother - which I did not know about when I moved in).
But animals do sense things we can't.

I once saw a program about a dog who lived in a nursing home and it knew which residents were going to pass on, as it would lay in the doorway of their room the night before they passed away.
    I think it's totally possible.

    1) I know what you mean but I have no clue that this could be caused by ghosts. We know that dogs can hear and smell things that we don't hear or smell, so this could be the reason.

    2) "Zoey loves to sit on the couch, look out the front window and bark at everything that moves. We consider this her "normal" behavior, although we're not exactly crazy about it.

Now the weird part.......at night (never during the day), she sometimes just stops what she's doing and runs to a side or back window and starts barking at the darkness. It's not the same bark as when she's in the front window (which is a long rapid succession of barks with jerky body movementsand wagging tail), but rather a woof-pause-woof-pause while standing perfectly still and a droopy tail. You get the idea. It's distinctly different."

    3) "Dogs are spiritual animals. As a matter of fact many animals are spiritual though they may exhibit a very low level of development of their brain. The brain only processes rational reality. So it doesn't matter if the animals have an under developed brain. Dogs can see spirits. They often respond to a spirit by barking. Humans can't do this. They are also very intuitive about things that are going to happen. Dogs can also bring good or bad luck to the owner."

    4) "One of the oldest known paranormal beliefs is that dogs have the ability to see or communicate with the dead. It would be easy to believe that people have come to that conclusion based on a dog’s natural behavior. We’ve all seen dogs stand still and stare or react to something we were unable to see or hear. However, there may be much more to it then that.
Most of the pet people I have known had some sort of a weird dog story to tell. The most common involves the death of a beloved dog owner. The dog owner would die and it always seems like his or her pet would know about the event before anyone else."

I had a friend whose dog had some neurological condition that caused him to do what you describe. He would also attack the air like he was attacking another animal. I think this is far more likely than your dog seeing spirits. What does the vet think?
