black dress trousers, you can dress them up, or down, depending on the choice of tops, white clean top blouse/shirt a smart jacket/blazer, thats a great start that is almost timeless !! :)

A nice blazer or jacket. If you buy a nice cut (because a smart jacket will never go out of style) in a color that goes with just about everything, you've won half the battle right there. Not only is it versatile as anything, it'll dress up whatever you wear underneath. Pair it with borderline-dressy pants or a skirt and neutral footwear and you're gold. If you can only buy one thing, make it that.
