  • i never had tivo, but i had dvt and dish. I find dish to be more expensive. I like dtv they have more channels compared to the same kind of package. I went back to dtv after having dish. my monthly bill with all discounts is only 50 a month. I have the package with the dvr. i forgot what package it is but i love it.
  • Only have Directv. I do not see how any other network could be better than Diretv. They are there when i need service and a real live person always answers the phone.
  • Contrary to Evelina, I've always found that DirecTV packages are more expensive than similar content DishNetwork packages. The difference used to be quite a lot, but it has narrowed somewhat. Also, their smallest packages tend to be smaller and quite a lot cheaper. So if you want just basic service, you will pay considerably less with DishNetwork. TiVo is not really an alternative to either Dish Network or DirecTV as it does not provide a way of getting content other than by recording satellite or cable channels. And these days, their newer models only support recording from over-the-air and cable. One thing TiVo does have going for it, though, is that you can download NetFlix and Amazon videos, and watch them, provided your TiVo is connected to broadband. Mine is connected to WiFi, and it's really pretty slick. TiVo is really nice and easy to use. But I should emphasize again that it does need cable TV, which you have to pay for, or at a minimum, an over-the-air (antenna) connection.
  • Dish Network is better. You mention TIVO, so I take it the discussion is about DVR's. My brother has TIVO, and I find it too cumbersome. I upgraded my DVR from VIP 622 to VIP 722 (Slightly More HD capacity). Dish Network's VIP622 & 722 are the simplest, and best DVR's. I tried out Direct TV's HR20. I felt crippled. It didn 't have a true 30 second skip, no multiroom share function, and no PIP built in. Check out DVR reviews. Dish Network is tops here. They also will have the most HD content by Feb 2009, 150 channels. And only Dish offers HD only packages. If NFL Ticket is something you need, then DirecTV is your only choice. Both satellite services offer mpeg-4 format, a better compression, something FIOS does not offer.
  • Personally, I prefer Dish Network. They have current specials at http://www.dishsite.com
