Question

Help answer this question below.

Tweek is my 7 yr old sun conure. He is tame, happy, playful, and sweet--along with the occasional nip to my son's friends, and to my cat and dog. I am thinking of getting him a companion(same cage)--a 3mos old green cheeked conure. Will they get along?

Conures are very clingy and they usually adapt to one person and tolerate the others of their human flock. Most do not want other birds taking their food, the time of their human bird and the space in their cage. Most people make the mistake of getting a companion. Conures already have a companion. It is you. If you get a bird it is because you want one. But be aware there will be a new pecking order. And you have to then separate the birds as they will and can do immediate and life threatening harm to each other. Plus if you get a new bird, you have to keep them separated. The new bird may have health issues and then you may have two dead birds.

Most conures do get along, however make sure they are not both male. Males tend to get aggressive to one another. One male and female, or two females should be fine together. Make sure your cage has plenty of room though, and to move around the toys and perches, to dissuade from territorial behavior. Putting them both in a cage with all the items moved will keep them occupied and not stimulate the older one to take advantage of the younger. If your cage is too small to house the adult size of your conures the older will dominate for the space and pick on the younger one.
Hope this gives a little help, good luck.
