Because it makes them feel superior for the moment. Because they view the world in dog-eat-dog terms and would prefer to eat rather than be eaten. Because someone has treated them in that way.

People belittle others to feel good about themselves. This means they are miserable with nothing to show for. In other circumstances, it is a sign of superiority and prosperity.
