I think it's to do with politeness. After sex, particularly if it's not with someone you're in a relationship with- it seems a bit rude to get up and have a shower, or go and order pizza straight away, but a bit awkward if you linger too long and want to chat when that might not be what the other person wanted. So having a cigarette gives you a not-too-intimate reason to linger in bed and chat a bit without it looking like you want to have their babies.
