I think she was a reporter who posed as a lunatic in an insane asylum quite some time ago (several decades) to expose the frightful conditions and mistreatment of patients that was going on at the time. I could definitely be wrong, though.

She is better known by her pen name, "Nellie Bly," which she adapted from the Stephen Foster song, "Nelly Bly."
