You are faced with at least two years, before the toenail grows fully back. you are going to have an uphill battle in fighting a fungus in the new toenail. i have experienced just this.

Use hydrogen peroxide daily, after washing your toenail. let it bubble. follow this with neosporin, twice a day. for the first 3 months, keep the effected toe dry.

Within a year, you should be able to determine if the toenail is going to be infected with fungus. the change of color is the key. compare one toenail with the other and notice if there is a coloration difference.

Lamasil topical is new. i have not used it, but if its as good as the pills, it should work just fine. i am not sure if lamasil topical ointment is by rx or not. call a pharmacy for info.

Do not be discouraged. it takes a long time to regrow a big toenail. it will happen.

That happened to me and it grew inward and needed surgery for an 'ingrown toenail'. SO keep putting cotton under each side to allow it to grow upwards. It may hurt a little but it will grow properly. good luck. ken

Do soaks and keep the area covered w/neosporin and a band-aid. If you a current athlete's feet, take care of that immediately as that can jump into your nail causing a fungal infection. Lamisil cream is over the counter and if you want a gel form you'll need to contact a compounding pharmacy to do that for you. Nails typically take about a year or so to grow back and if you injured it several times, it may grow back thick.

To keep it clean, get something like this:

For everything else, contact a doctor.
