  • "Boston Legal" is a spin-off from "Boston Public". Quite a few years ago "Maude" was a spin-off from "All in the Family". "Rhoda" was a spin-off from the "Mary Tyler Moore Show". "Mama's Family" was a spin-off from "The Carol Burnett SHow". I'm sure if I gave it a little more thought, I would be able to mention others. Thanks for asking your Q! I enjoyed answering it! • I guess it all comes down to good writing, interesting stories and/or characters that have grown on you and you care about. When I think of good Spin-off projects: Cheers->Frasier Star Trek and all its variations (some more successful than others)etc. I see them share these characteristics
  • Happy days spin-off Laverne & Shirley did well. I loved watching Barney Miller and the character Fish was funny, but the spin-off Fish wasn't.
  • The law and order jury by trial didn't do so good. I liked it but I guess not many did as I only seen it a few times when it first came out. I noticed that most of the ones dealing with crime reflects on normal day life. The shows almost make you feel like it is live and real. They are full of emotions which make you get emotional and wanting more.
  • 227 was a spin off of The jeffersons Flo was a spin off of Alice
  • The worst was probabl "Aftermash", when they tried to follow Col. Potter, Klinger and a few others stateside to a V.A. hospital after Korea--but the drama they did of "Trapper John, M.D. was really good. All In the Family begat Maude which begat Good Times. All in the family became Archie Bunker's Place after they bumped off Edith; that was jumping the shark ! Mary Tyler Moore spun Phyllis (which was awful) and Lou Grant as well as Rhoda Lou Grant was another drama, with a terriffic ensemble cast.
  • The X-files had a very short-lived spinoff: "The Lone Gunmen". It lasted all of three episodes, I think, but I LOVED it. I'm sad it bit the dust, really.
  • Happy Days was a sort of spin-off itself--it started as a story on Love American Style. Mork and Mindy was another spin-off from Happy Days, as was the horrible Joanie Loves Chachi.
