The tonights show with Johny Carson
Ed Sullivan talked to most all acts about what was happening, and where they were going to be.
However, if you don't count that, I'd say it would be Dick Cavett or Mike Douglas.
The first I remember where the host walked into the audience was Phil Donahue.
I never really watched it, but Mike Douglas was always on tv.
Donahue
Phil Donahue.
Art Linkletter's 'House Party'
Uh oh, this is really aging me.... but.... Merv Griffin! He was really great.

Mike Douglas show and Phil Donahue. Wow, I'm old. ;)
The first talk show I actually remember watching was The Phil Donahue Show at my grandma and grandpas house.
Long before Johnny Carson ... before Jack Paar (I liked him as well) ... I loved to stay up and watch the ORIGINAL "Tonight Show" with Steve Allen.

Merv Griffin.
Probably Phil Donahue.
Somehow missed this one! Decided to look up when the big talk shows aired. Knew each was "a long time"! lol So? Here you go:
Merv Griffin (1962-1986)
Mike Douglas (1961-1982)
Dick Cavett (1968-1986)
Dinah Shore (the interview ones of the 70s for talk shows ... vs her earlier DS Chevy Show (variety show) of the 50s/60s)
Phil Donahue (1975-1993)
Phil Donahue changed the whole format of daytime talk shows from interviews with celebs to talking about issues .. even taboo ones. Many more followed his lead .. from Jerry Springer to Oprah .. and a ton of others.
Ed Sullivan ... then the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson ... after that Late Night with David Letterman ...
Talk show would be Jack Paar or Steve Allen...wow that's 1,000 years ago.
Mike Douglas and Gary Collins.
