    Good question! People often use the default or pick based on their moods. Fonts are generally divided into two categories. Serif and san serif. Serif fonts have short strokes at the top and bottom of the letters. An example would be Times New Roman. San serif fonts- translated without serif- do not have stroke marks. An example is Comic Sans MS.

    Serif types work best for smaller text and for letters. Think of the font in books. From a design standpoint, the strokes are designed to help the eye glide across the page without losing the place. For official documents, I would suggest a serif font with a squared serif tip, instead of round.

    San serif fonts tend to look simple and elegant. They are great in a larger type, like a centered title. San serif fonts can tire the eyes more quickly if used in a lengthy document, because the eyes have to work harder to read the text.
