Most mom's are understandable and all you should have to do is mention it and chances are she won't ask why.
No need to be rude if she is buying them just be honest and let her know why.
There area few reasons why some guys like the boxer briefs better. here are a few.
1. they support you better
2. they wont bunch up on tighter pants
3. they don't bind like that boxers can
Being open and selected over your under clothing chances are she will let you pick them out yourself.

Boxer briefs offer better support, and (according to my husband) are much more comfortable for working out (pe courses). That's enough of a good reason.

when i switched from boxers to boxerbriefs i just said i need some underwear for wrestling cause boxers get bunched up in my singlet. But like half a year later i ended up just switching to just plain briefs. When changing i realized the only reason i got boxerbriefs was for support and a snugger feeling, so why have the legs ride up when you can just wear briefs
