Of course, since you can die without taking ANY pills. But one ecstasy pill that isn't adulterated with anything else shouldn't provoke death unless you are right on the verge anyway, and the activity you get into while high does you in.
To say deaths are pretty rare would be an understatement. In 2001 (last year figures are available) there were far fewer emergency room visits from MDMA than from asprin. There were 76 deaths involving MDMA, but all but 9 of those were cases where other drugs were in the mix. There is no information on the level of dosage that proved toxic in those 9 deaths.
There are two legitimate health concerns that would contraindicate using MDMA, aside of course from the obvious one that prison time might not be good for your health. If you have heart disease or arrhythmia, MDMA may aggravate the condition. If you are planning to be out in a hot setting, many of the emergency room visits and deaths resulted from malignant hyperthermia/hyperpyrexia; i.e., heatstroke.
