I worked in the horse industry for years. Stud fees are expensive and feeding a barren mare for a year with no return will kill you financially. Before we bred a mare, we did everything possible to make sure she would settle and carry to term. We did our very best to prevent miscarriages before we started. We had the vet check her for infection and hormone levels. We made sure her weight was appropriate. We got her as fit as we could. We checked her for venereal disease (yes, horses get them too). The stallion was also checked before the start of the season for sufficient sperm count and motility. He was checked for testosterone level and venereal disease/infections as well.

When my husband and I decided we wanted a child, we approached conception the same way. I wasn't able to get down all the way to a healthy weight, but I lost thirty pounds. We had my blood sugar checked and thyroid. I was diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome through this process, and I had surgery for it and began taking medication for it. I got my asthma and chronic bronchitis under control as much as possible. We never had to check my husband, because after getting myself in good health we conceived on the first try.

I would highly suggest seeing a doctor and just making sure that you are in good enough health to carry a baby to term first. Carrying a baby is very hard on your body. It robs calcium from your bones, it puts a lot of wear and tear on your kidneys and gall bladder. In the last trimester, the baby presses on your heart and lungs and makes even getting a deep breath impossible. If you aren't strong enough to go through it, you may miscarry. It is better to try to prevent that before you start.

    How old are you?
Have you ever been pregnant before?
    Do you have regular periods?

I'm trying to think about what else might affect fertility...

Sometimes it's the man too - you could have his sperm count tested...
