There have been 18 Republicans, 13 Democrats, 4 Whigs, 4 Democratic Republicans, 2 unaffiliated, and one National Union Party. Thurgood Marshall was the first black Supreme Court justice, confirmed in August 1967, appointed by Johnson,. Sandra Day O'Connor was the first woman Supreme Court justice, and was white. There have not been any black females on the Court. Nor have there been any blacks to hold the office of Chief Justice. No, I don't capitalize black.

Hardcore was correct in his info. However, if black is used as a proper noun then it should be capitalized. (That is if you are using it to describe a certain group of people.) Ex: The Blacks voted...... & Ex: The little sheep was black.
