Older age may have a bearing. if not this, is there something different in your home or job? sometimes in winter, dry heat in the home or car, will cause eyes to dry out.
Happens to my wife. some are effected. some not.

When I'm tired, my eyes feel dry and I want to shut them. Is it that do you think?
It could be something in the air that is not agreeing with you, or simply dry air. If you are indoors when this is happening, but a dish of water near to the radiator/fire or source of heating which will help to moisten the air.
