I caved in and got a guide from x-box360redlightfix.com and it worked for me....it's been 7 months now and no more problems... =)
If your Xbox 360 console is showing 2 red lights or showing a message on the screen that means you have error 74 and you need o fix this problem so that you can enjoy your console. You might also get 1 red light error or 3 red light errors and whenever you get some error messages or red lights, you need to fix these problems quickly so that further damage to the console is minimized.
In most of the cases, your console might get heated and an important scalar chip of the system has burnt out. If you get error 74, you have limited number of options with you and these are either you learn the repairing technique yourself or send the console to Microsoft for repair.
If you opt for the later option, you will need to ship your console to Microsoft. In addition you will also require to send them $140 as fee and will have to wait for about a month to get back your gaming console. This is quite lengthy procedure and even then you are not sure to get back your console safe, as there might be any damage to your Xbox 360 in transit. Further you will have to bear the shipping charges and therefore the former option of repairing your console yourself will be much easy for you as it has many advantages.
There are many DIY (do it yourself) guides available at the Internet and you can buy a suitable guide below $30 and can start learning immediately. Once you go through easy video demonstrations for fixing your error 74, you will only need less than one and half hour to repair your console. Thus you will not only save one-month time but will save more than $100.
So, choose the right option right now and enjoy gaming on your favorite Xbox 360 console.
