The short answer is that one or more of the sensors on your engine needs to be replaced. The good news here is that if you have reasonable mechanical skills, you can probably do this yourself. The bad news is that you first have to figure out which sensor is the culprit. It could be on the intake end, and it could be on the exhaust end.

The problem is that a sensor is giving inaccurate information to your vehicle's computer, and the computer is compensating for nonexistent fluctuations in the vehicle's speed, or the engine's RPM.

If you have a service manual for your vehicle (and you should) look at it and see if your vehicle has a self-diagnostic mode. If it does, use it to figure out which sensor is bad, and replace it. If it does not, you need to take it to a good mechanic who has the appropriate diagnostic tools, and he can then tell you which sensor needs to be replaced. Depending on which sensor needs to be replaced, you may need to buy a specific tool to do so, but trust me, this will be much cheaper than paying a mechanic to do it for you.

These are generalities, of course. I have also run into a similar problem with a vehicle that had throttle-body injection. The problem, in that case, was an o-ring that functioned as a gasket for the injector. It had broken, and somehow worked its way down to dangle and flop in the cone of fuel the injector emitted. A $12.95 part from Pontiac, a 79 cent part at the hardware store. 79 cents and a couple of bucks for a T20 bit, and I was back on the road with the car purring like a kitten. :) Oh, after a day or two of scratching my head and cussing, of course. :)
