If you are working on your diet, you're adding in exercise and you're finding that you're not losing weight, you might go in to ask your doctor to check your thyroid. If your TSH levels are high (hypothyroid), your body will have trouble revving up your metabolism. This is an easily controlled condition, once you become aware of it.

The answer to that question will depend on the individual's situation.

As a very general answer, one of the largest problems people encounter when trying to lose weight is maintaining the weight loss. Weight loss is only sustainable when accompanied by permanent lifestyle changes, such as in exercise and eating habits. This is why fad diets usually work temporarily. Fad diets are, by definition, temporary diets and, therefore, cannot provide the sort of changes necessary to keep weight off.

For people who do begin to make those necessary lifestyle changes, it can be difficult to lose weight for a number of reasons. First of all, it's important to increase exercise and activity and to manage food intake; doing only one of these things is unlikely to accomplish the desired result. Depending on your body weight and size and your activity levels, the amount of calories you need each day will vary. Some people don't decrease their caloric intake enough, while others decrease it too much and send their bodies into starvation mode. While in a state of starvation, your body scrimps and saves every calorie you eat in order to survive. You may feel exhausted and weak. Still others do not add enough exercise into their daily regimes to make a difference, even when they've decreased caloric intake appropriately.

Another important consideration is that as a person gains muscle mass and loses fat, he/she may actually retain the same amount of weight while undergoing healthy body changes. Muscle is more dense than fat and so a small amount of muscle will weigh the same as a larger amount of fat. To avoid discouragement, it's a good idea to monitor changes in your body in addition to the numbers on the scale--after all, it's for looking and feeling better that most people try to lose weight.

If you are serious about losing weight, it's a good idea to talk to your doctor and make an appointment with a nutritionist and personal trainer to help you design a good plan for healthy, sustainable weight loss.

The US Gov't. provides many good resources on nutrition and weight loss; here are a few:

    (on nutrition and weight loss)

    http://www.nutrition.gov/index.php?mode=subject&subject=ng_sports&d_subject=Sports_ampersand_Exercise
    (on exercise)

I'm sorry that this is a very generic answer, but it would help to have more details on the specific problems you're having. Please don't regard this as an exhaustive answer--I hope others will add to it!
