My understanding is that for a rechargeable battery you should let it lose as much of its charge as possible, because over time if you recharge it too frequently you will limit the amount of charge it is able to hold.
This depends on the type of battery. Typically cell phones now days use lithium ion batteries and there is no real memory associated with these batteries as there was with the older Nickle Metal Hydride batteries. The Nickel Metal batteries had a physical memory that if you did not fully charge and then discharge them it would slowely beging to have memory degradation and eventually you would never get a full charge.

How long do you have to charge a new cellular phone the very first time? I've heard that you have to charge it as long as one whole day (do not unplug even if it says fully charged after say 2 hours) or else your cellular phone battery wouldn't last long.
