What's wrong with telling someone to take a hike? Since when does that have negative connotations?

    For humor purposes. If someone told me to take a hike, I would tell him to go f*ck himself, which is much more funny. =D

    Its a nicer way to tell someone to GO AWAY! So I guess it always had negative connotations.
