    do you mean like...a stick-and-poke?
I've never had problems with mine... if you've already done it, and it's starting to itch or anything, wash it with DIAL antibacterial hand soap. I don't recommend rubbing alcohol.
if you haven't done it yet, make sure you dip your needle(s) in rubbing alcohol, and then light them on fire, then wash them in the alcohol again.
make sure the area to be tattooed is really clean before you start, and wash your hands as well.

bandage the tattoo right after you do it, and redress it often.
also, some people react differently to certain kinds of ink. I've used gel pen ink, which did not fade at all, and didn't inflame.
I've also used Japanese Sumi ink, which gives an interesting effect.

or, just come to Massachusetts, and I'll do it for you free-of-charge. i do all my friend's tattoos.
let me know how it turns out.
