  • While each character is a syllable and has its own meaning, many (or most) words are made from more than one syllable/character, as is the case with the example you have given. The first character is the third person singular pronoun, and as written means "he" or "him." The second character indicates plurality. The two characters together indicate the third person plural pronoun, "they" or "them." Case is determined by context. So, if the word is polysyllabic, the syllables are usually written together when the word is Romanized. I think this makes it easier to read and process the Romanized words, instead of reading each syllable separately and having to mentally combine them. 你学中文吗?
  • To me the reason is very plain and simple. 他们 mean 'they' (one word in English) in Chinese and therefore in pinyin it is 'tamen' which is also one word. It is just matching.
