NO, If someone has one of those disorders and happens to be a friend, or family member, I accept them for who they are. If I found out that someone I know casually was, it would have nothing to do with any negative thoughts of them

YEs, because if I thought they were normal and had a strange sense of humor, and found out they were diagnosed with a mental disorder, I would then know that they weren't normal anymore. If the facts change, then so does the opinion.

For me I go "OHHH thats why he/she does this or that...Okay now it makes sense." I immediately look up everything I can and read anything on it, then I support this person now that I understand the person. No change negitive just understanding of the person. Love them through it day after day.

In a sense it does b/c I have a lot more respect for someone who has to deal with more than a healthy average person. But, if I already liked and respected them, they already had it. So, it may be enhanced a bit, but that is about it.

Not for me personally unless their illness is out of control. Most people these days who are diagnosed with a mental illness take some kind of medication for it. I know that with mental illness it's not something they've chosen for themselves, it's actually a huge headache. I don't mind being friends or having a relationship with someone who has a mental illness as long as they keep it under control. If they take it out on me, then I'm out. No matter what illness you might have, you still have the choice to be a good person and do the right thing.

Not particularly. Some of my friends are Bi-Polar or depressed. Some of my family are. Heck the doctors think *I* am (I am not, they just want to put me on pills). I have great respect for them, getting through life as well as they do

no my opinion wouldnt change just because i found out someone had a mental health illness. this is why people dont get help and suffer in silence for the fear of being pushed away by everyone around them. people with mental health issues are no different they just need a little help now and again, i have had depression and i have anxiety both are mental health problems and noone would know just by looking at me. the only people that know are my dad and my bf because they have had to put up with me through the rough times.

No, only to offer support and a hand of friendship. If you had a violent disorder I would be more cautious for my own safety, though.

  • Not really, because I usually am the one that figures out they have a disorder.. But if I find out they do I generally treat them the same way I would treat anyone else, with the exception that I know somethings that may cause them pain. (I have BPD and so I have a little exprerience in ignorant people) :P

when you consider 10 percent of our population has been diagnosed with a mental illness.. and there are many who haven't been diagnosed, you really have no room to judge.

No. One of my friends has Bi-Polar disorder, and i only found out last year. i have known her for about five years. My opinion of her did not change one bit, i just respected the fact that she had been through more than i thought she had been through.

Well, yes it does. I have read a answers and comments posted here. But the fact is, my opinion does change. I'm replying because my 1st cousin is schizophrenic. Before she was diagnosed, we thought she was one mean bitch or high on drugs. She suffered from manic depression also. She's tried suicide, been abusive, hospitalized and been on medication.
As long as she stays on medication (and there's been many, many different types) she's able to enjoy a normal life. The problem with her is that while she's feeling "normal", she doesn't want to take her meds. Thus the cycle begins again.
Personally, I have always enjoyed being around her. She has a wonderful, funny personality and has great insight. When she's not taking her meds, I don't let her get away with any bullsh*t. She appears to appreciate it & never presses it.
So.....yes, knowing someone's condition does effect my opinion. I know it does for me. Sorry if you're offended.

Yes, my opinion changes. I realize the struggles that the person goes through on a daily basis, and my empathy, compassion, and understanding of their eccentricities increases. I guess it is much the same as finding out a person has diabetes. You have a tremendous respect for their fortitude, and you want to reach out and help them when they need it just a little more than you did before.
