Good question! I think it is highly possible, but I don't think it will happen in my lifetime. However, I do think it would be a good thing for the country. As far as I'm concerned, the more choices we have, the merrier.

The Republican party WAS a third party. It had been the Democrats and Whigs before that. There are many people who love Ron Paul not realizing he too is a Republican. I don't see the other parties even coming close. Other then a decent showing of Perot and Anderson from long ago - no one today can fill the vacuum.

It's happened before, but would be very difficult now since both Republicans and Democrats are very firmly entrenched.

Yes and I hope we could all get behind one to make it work. I'd be very happy to see the whole lot thrown out and truly get politicians that really have us in mind, not their jobs/tiltes.

Sure. If people get ticked enough at how the major parties screw up the country.

Ross Perot came pretty close with the independent reform party.

I think having a popular vote to seat ratio would be better. A third party would create a scenario of minority governments and coalitions.

No not really. The United States stopped being a Democratic country a long time ago.

I think it could..contingent on the viability of the candidate. So far the other parties have been considered 3rd rate and as such not taken seriously..therefore the candidates haven't been taken seriously. But that could change at some date in the future, as long as the third party isn't one of extremes...too much govenment/too little government..neither is good. :)

No. What has happened in the past is a third party is made simply to promote one particular view, prohibition for the prohibitionists for example, either the Republicans or Democrats take on that view. The third party then is denconstructed.
