can i use my laptop while the adaptor is plugged into outlet(ac)or should i plug adaptor into ac only when charging it?

I got a laptop 2 months ago, it died bc it was on too long. I plugged it in & it works but it shuts off when i unplug it Whats wrong?

My wife is constantly unplugging my iphone and ipad to charge her gear. What should I do? @answers? buy her a charger of her own :)
