Probably because we have the odd habit of stuffing them in jars for our amusement. I imagine that stuffing anything in a jar would have an adverse effect on it's lifespan.

Most insects live for a brief period as adults with the main function of the adult stage being dispersal to new locations, mating, and laying eggs (in that order). There are exceptions but a few weeks to a month are typical if they do not get consumed. The light signalling is to attract mates (in most species). The larval stages extent over a greater period of time which is when most of the feeding and growing occurs.
