Beatnik's were an end product of the repressed 50's. A precursor to the hippies of the 60's. Thier lifestyle was one of limited social rebellion, drug experimentation. Many were frustrated with an overly repressive and structured society. Think of them as "hippie lite". They set the stage for the later, more aggressive turmoil of the 60's.

Cool people of the late 60s and 70s.
At least, they thought they were cool.
Some were drug addicts, alcoholics and the women wore flowers and drove funky automobiles/
It was also known as the "beat generation". poetry was usually read and cited all the time.
Pot smoking and free sex rained among the beatniks or cool people.
It was just a fad, like leisure suits and dyed different color hair of today.
