  • I would say that there isn't an age....why limit yourself to when you can start doing something.
  • There's a book for adults interested in ballet as a hobby -- called "The Joffrey Ballet School's Ballet-Fit" Here's the amazon.com link -- http://www.amazon.com/Joffrey-Ballet-Schools-Ballet-Fit/dp/0312194706 I bought myself the NYC Ballet workout DVD for the holidays & it's pretty cool. After doing yoga for 5 years, I needed a change & was curious about dance, so after trying the DVD, I signed up for a ballet class at a studio. To be a professional, starting before 20 would be good -- but just for fun or a hobby -- even 40 or 50 is okay if a person has the desire & is in good health. Of course, some flexibility, strength, and coordination is a plus, but desire is most important.
  • you are never to old to learn ballet. You go.
  • Never too old if you feel you can do it then try
  • I think that once one turns fifty-nine years old they should not try to become a ballet dancer. It just wouldn't look right. by taxigringo.
  • never ever too old. i started when i was 3 and if you want to be a "bellerina" in a professional sense i recomend starting as early as possible. But if you are interested in it and want a new hobbie and learn a new skill start anytime. I know women in their 20s and 30s who are givign it a shot.
  • I know that it can be difficult to hop into a class. However, trust me when I say that you won't be dissapointed. If you've never had any formal training before, just take an easy class to begin with, and then gradually get more difficult as to not put too much strain on your body. Go Try Ballet!=]
  • no age, i have an aunt that's middle age who does ballet in her spare time
  • You can start ballet at any age. I used to teach dance, we had a lady who took her first ballet class when she was in her 70's. Now, if you are talking about a child who wishes to become a dancer, then the earlier they start (after the age of three) the better. However, with determination and commitment as long as they start before their teens they can do well.
  • Never too old to begin. If you would like to be professional then there are limits because of the time within which the body is still pliable. But you should dance no matter what. If you would like someone to be professional, I believe they begin with children around the age of 6 at the St. Petersburg ballet.
  • your never to old to learn ballet if you set your heart to it
  • There is no age too old it is just the aims that would be different. You could not take up Ballet in adulthood and realistically expect to become a Prima Ballerina or even a professional . You still have the pleasure of the dance though.
  • Too old? I don't think you can be too old for ballet. If I want to learn to ballet I should be able to do it despite my age. But uh, yeah...I don't want to of course:)
  • You can take ballet whenever you want, but if you want it as a career the earlier the better. Most ballerinas are "too old" by the age of 24.
  • never too old for ballet, if its just for the recreational dancing... anyone can start and enjoy doing ballet at any age...its good for the body and mind.. but if a child wishes to be a dancer..yes there are age limits and exceptions too
  • there is no such age. I started at 17 after dancing jazz and disco freestyle and hip hop all my life. i started it in college and have taken my majors exams i am not on my way to becoming a teacher
  • follow your dream at any age
  • Never if yo uwant to do it then do it no one can tell you that you are too old or too young
  • YOUR NEVER TOO OLD! :D THATS THE BEAUTY OF BALLET! TRYING HARD NO MATTER HOW UR BODY IS AND UR SHAPE AND SIZE. ALL U NEED IS HARD WORK =] =]
  • Hey! I have a little experience here... I started ballroom n latin dancing when i was 4...but only started ballet when i was like 15...and i dnt regret it at all! I absolutely love it! done a couple of exams n got distiction! so ur never too old to start! I would advise u to ask to be put in at a highish grade...i started at grade 4. Just go for it with confidence! you'll love it! plus, tis a really good way to keep fit!! =]
  • You can pick it up anytime you want! Ballet is very important for many different dance disciplines. These days many dance studios offer more beginner levels for higher age groups so you don't feel odd about joining a class full of 8 year olds!!!!! i just started ballet after doing it on and off for a couple years! i've been doing it a little here and there since i was 5 and now i'm 13 and i'm back in class. i was a little nervous at first because i was worried that i wouldn't remember any moves but that wore off quickly. if you want to join a class with a little bit more experience so you feel more comfortable than see if you can get a couple 30min/1 hour private lessons before you start. hope i helped!!!!!
  • I would say none, just make sure you're not injuring yourself too much by doing it. I started at 12, quit, then started again at 14. My class turned into more of a modern class, then I started again at 16.
  • I am 18 and want to get back into dance. I have never done Ballet, and want to give it a try. The only thing is- there are no beginners adult classes I can take. The only beginners classes are for 12-year-olds. I am not too keen on that. Soon as I find an adult Ballet beginner's class, I'm there. :)
  • your never to old for ballet..its good therapy!! professional though ends(my opinion there may be others)at an age around 26 or older depending on your endurance
  • never too old.
  • You are never ever to old to start ballet. I have been doing it for ten years and still going strong!! If you work hard at it you will deffintaly excceed.
  • I think it really depends on how hard you work... I started when I was 4....and my dance teacher started when she was 12....and she's still very professional!!
  • For fun, any age. To be a professional no later then 10 or 11. Serious ballet cannot start until around 7 years of age when the body is developed enough. Men have an advantage and can start later for a professional career. Most professional dancers are done with their training at around 16 years of age. They enter an affiliate school of a ballet company that they wish to join at that age (if they are not already attending one) and learn their style and repertory. If all goes well they are then asked to be an apprentice at around 17 or 18. After about a year they are asked to join the company or let go. There have been some pros that have started a bit later, but they had extraordinary facility and extraordinary ballet bodies.
  • Its never too late, but most companies don't accept dancers over the age of 30.
