I always speak up, even if I do look like a fool! My brain can make things worse than they are so if I clear up doubt from my mind it's better.

absolutely... once you start to speak you can incriminate yourself to look like way more of a fool then you already are.. i agree you are better to keep your mouth shut from personal experience

being silent/quiet is kinda of a good feature, because it shows that you listen and you really don't want the wrong words coming out your mouth. If your going to listen to a fool... then you are a fool. if somebody is foolish enough to call you such a name, and your foolish enough to believe it, then your a fool. but like i said with the positive side. people tend to say the wrong thing when they open their mouth, whether its out of anger or some crap. so it's best to keep quiet. more importantly... BE yourself

I think it is always better to say what you think..be brave enough to stand up and be counted. Whether others understand/disagree/agree is irrelevant. Unless you go through life currying the favor of everyone else and don't have a backbone or inner confidence, what others think should make no difference to you..what is paramount is what you think and whether or not you have the courage of your convictions to state it, out loud, despite taking the chance of getting smacked down. Just my opinion of course. :) There is always the chance there may be others who agree with you and voila! You've made new friends! :)

Depends on what the subject is, sometimes it is best to be silent but sometimes you have to speak up for something that is really important to you. Like the old saying goes, if you don't stand for something you will fall for anything. But I do get what you are saying if it something that you aren't 100% sure about and don't really know alot about it is best to keep silent.
