  • Japan had ened its almost complete isolation fromthe rest of the world 41 years before Japan's 1894 invasion of China. President Millard Fillmore had sent Commodore Matthew Perry to presuade Japan to open its doors to trade with the West. In 1854 Perry's fleet of seven warships sailed into Edo-present-day Toyko-and presented Japan's rulers with gifts that inculded a telegraph transmitter and a model train. The Japanese leaders agreed to the western demands for trade. They reasoned that if they did not, foreigners might seize control of their nation. Japan rapidly transformed itself into an industrial power and built up its army and navy.
  • After the Tokugawa Shogunate and during the Meiji Period, Japan began to accept western influences. That's why it became so powerful so quickly, and why it's a world power now.
