I have a Syvania dvd/vcr combo. When I set it to timer record, it does not retain the setting. Is there something other than "menu" that I'm supposed to press when I'm done inputting the information?

Are you making sure the power is OFF when you are through. Most VCRs won't start a timed recording if the power of the VCR is still on when the preset time comes around.

I have one also, but depending on the model, it could vary. Tell me the model # and if it is like mine I'll look up my directions. Mine is fairly new.

i have the same question because when i set the timer to record it does not turn on and start recording. And yes i turn the power off after setting it.

I'm having the same problem with my Akai VCR. My Sony VCR wasn't working so I borrowed a friend's Akai VCR and it won't time record. I too am turning the power off and trying everything.
