Yes, it's optional. You don't have to do it. i chose to do both Bronze and Silver Awards (there is also a Gold). The DoE website is http://www.theaward.org/

Yes of course The Duke of Edinburgh award has been going since the late 1950s or early 60s. , it is totally optional. Can be great fun and involve a lot of sport or treks, helping the community. Too many things to recountbut well worh having a go at doing.
