  • The previous answer is not quite right. Sand dollars, like starfish, belong to the phylum Echinodermata (Latin for Spiny Skins), but they are not the same thing. All echinoderms had five-part radial symmetry, and many do have spiny exteriors. There are several classes of Echinoderms. The two classes most people know about are the Eleutherozoa (starfish and sea stars) and the Echinoidea (sea urchins and sand dollars). You might also be familiar with sea cucumbers. Sand dollars are flat and lie on the sea floor, feeding on organisms and organic material suspended in the water.
