I have heard/read that they add beef flavour to the fries in USA, as they used to be fried in beef tallow, and vegetable oil does not leave the same flavour after frying as tallow does.

Many moons ago, I was setting up an exhibition. And as happens, we were working late, so someone went out to get food for the entire crew - 20+ people. They went to a Macdonalds and bought a load of "edibles". So the Macdonalds people gave them a box to take it all back - a box which had originally the makings of Macdonalds fries. So, as law requires, it had the ingredients on the outside. Man, was that frightening! Serious chemical factories have fewer ingredients. Half of it id didn't understand, but most of it I didn't want to eat.
