  • Dip your nails in something sour like lemon-juice to help you remember not to bite, or wear gloves all the time. You could also attach a rubber-band to your wrist and snap it whenever you feel like biting your nails.
  • I stopped biting mine by keeping them filed and polished. I became a compulsive nail-filer for a little while but my nails always looked so nice, I didn't want to wreck them by biting them. As they got longer I wanted to bite them less and less to keep them looking nice. Sometimes it's easier to replace one habit with a better one.
  • Nail biting is usually caused by something like stress or lack of sleep. If you bite your nails all the time, the first step is to identify whats stressing you out. To relieve stress try taking a hot bath and adding bubbles, essential oils, or anything you like (scented candles, or listen to music) at least once a week. Or try to get more sleep, and drink more water or milk. I've been a nail biter for 10 years (!), and my parents tried eveything, even rubbing hot peppers on my nails. This doesnt usually work, because all you have to do is just wash your hands. The only thing that has helped me are weekly manicures (I actually stopped for a couple years). Try to pick darker colours, so you know the nail polish is there. The only thing I do now is chew off the polish sometimes (pick non-toxic), and VERY rarely bite my nails anymore. • I too was a nail biter for years, well into my adulthood. An elderly man saw my nails at my employment and gave me this advice: buy a nice nail file and the minute you get the "sharp" edges from biting the nail, simply file the sharpness off. It sure worked! I have since given this advice to several people and it worked for them as well. It is such a simple solution you wouldn't think it would work but it sure does. Good luck!
  • At some salons you are able to buy a clear polish to keep you from biting them because when you do this polish has an awful bitter taste..a few times of getting a taste of that and you'll think twice, but i'm not really sure what it's called.
  • I was a terrible nail biter when I was younger. I started to get acrylic nails over ten years ago and have not had the urge to bite since. I keep them nice and this is my reward for not biting them. Acrylic is much more difficult to break off!
  • try not trying to wear out the nail from underneath the tip by scratching or picking at them. Clean them with a q tip, because i find that i tend to bite my nails when i feel there brittle. If you like the white tip look, get a french manicure.
  • The best way to cure a nail-biting habit is by chopping off your fingers. At least it worked for my Great Aunt Martha.
  • Just think about what you're chewing on. Even if you wash your hands there is still bacteria there. You may not see it, but there is dirt under nails ans that's just gross if you chew on them. That's how I stopped my habit. Or set a goal. Example: If you don't chew your nails for a week, get a manicure! Hope I helped!
  • Keeping them painted at all times helps me. You need to use a good quality polish such as Hard Candy, but I find that an "out of sight out of mind" approach works. Getting false acrylic or gel nails can also help, as you can't get to the nail to bite it- and if you can bite off a gel nail then you have the kind of teeth that could get in the Guiness Book of Records.
  • I used this method and believe me it's great. You just have to wear a rubber band on both of your hands. Whenever you bite your nails pull the band and release it. It's pianful but after some days your habit will go.
  • There is a product available at the pharmacy that tastes aweful and applies like nail polish. Try it...it works...it worked for me!
  • One fellow simply bought a bunch of nailfiles and left one at every place he'd ever caught himself biting them. When they're filed right down, you won't bite them. I myself prefer a wood file from the hardware store; it's much faster and they don't get lost.
  • I dont't know if you're a guy or a girl, but for girls(and guys can wear it too, but :S) they have nail polish that has a very awful taste(and aftertaste) and that could prevent you from biting your nails....also (I'm not saying you do), but biting nails is a sign of lack of confidence and nervousness(just like cracking youf fingers (knuckles)), Tugging at your shirt, Hands in your pockets, etc....so that can be a motivation to make you stop(but again, im not suggestiong you lack confidence)
  • As was mentioned by another user, you could try using some clear nailpolish on you fingernails. It discourages biting because of the nasty aftertaste left in your mouth. I have had a few friends that used this technique and it helped them stop! You can try something like Jessica 'Nibble No More,' a no-nail-biting polish with bitter cactus extract as its secret ingredient ($5 at jessicacosmetics.com). Or you can also try a product like the one pictured below. It is available at these sites: http://stopbitingnails.com/ http://stopbitingnails.com/products.htm http://beauty.about.com/od/perfectnails/f/bitingnails.htm
  • I tried almost everything to stop biting my nails. As BFF farmer said, it is a sign of nervousness. As I gradually became more self-confident, one day I just stopped biting just like that. Try to figure out why you bite your nails, treat the cause instead of the symptoms.
  • Simple. put clear or white medical tape on each fingernail. it will be a constant reminder of your problem and to avoid. kind of like tieing a ribbon on your finger, as a reminder. it works.
  • Rub jalapeno pepper juice on your nails... hopefully that'll work, good luck!
  • chow gum.
  • Put hot sauce or anything you hate, deteste on your nail 2.Write a big sign close to your bed or the place you won,t miss " I won't bite my nails again. That's nasty/bad habit or whatever you want to say" and Make a commitment to stick to it. That was one of the suggestions my preacher gave me when I wanted to quit smoking. That works since over 8 years. The most important thing is your commitment. Do you really want to quit doing it or not ?
  • when you get home lite a candle and dip your finger tips into them it will be just a bit hot not too much.. anyways dip your nails in ony about a centimeter after that et them dry up and get hard. if you get tempted to bite your nails you cnat cuz u have that layer of wax and its nasty to bite wax. take the wax off before going to sleep
  • Find an activity that requires both your hands to do. If your hands are busy, you won't have time to bite them. It needs to be something you enjoy more than biting your nails. The more aerobic it is the better it will work. You will find yourself more relaxed when you aren't engaged in whatever it is. And with the exercise, you will likely sleep better lessening your overall tension. You'll be less likely to do it in bed just before you go to sleep too.
  • Get about three dozen emery boards and put one in every place where you sit still long enough to bite your nails. Carry a nail file with you. I prefer to use a wood file from the hardware store on mine, but then I'm a man. If you keep them filed short enough, you won't bite them.
  • Put something unpleasent tasting on them.
  • Soak them in garlic.
  • Wear gloves, or put lotion on your hands so that you will get that taste in your mouth when you go to bite them. That helped me to stop biting my nails.
  • I've been biting my nails sense before i can remember. I can't stop, but what seems to keep me off the longest is get fake nails. Keep them on as long as you can. You can't bite those ones.
  • Sink them in lemon juice. My mother did this with my baby sister and we found out my sister actually loved the taste of lime, so as Mr.Maxwell said: soak them in garlic. That sour taste will prevent the habit.
  • Chew gum, the reason you chew your fingernails is because you want to chew something gum helps
  • keep your nails trimmed...
  • Thum (it's spelled THUM). My little sister use to bite her fingernails all the time until my mom started to put it on them (it's a nail polish that it's glossy and dries clear that is made of some really hot chili oil or something and when you put your fingers into your mouth you will hate the taste and then you stop biting if you keep putting it on. It was invented for babies and children that suck their thumbs, but it works for nail biters also.
  • Go on holidays to a developing country. You are so concerned about getting sick that you never put your hands near your mouth and you break the habit. At the same time, you have a great holiday (relax) and can even be of assistance to the locals by bringing some school supplies and toys or clothes to the kids.
  • My way is very simple. Just think about how your nails turn gray (and eventually) black! That's how I stopped!
  • I used to have one, so what I did was whenever I bit my nails I would slap myself on the face. Every time would get increasingly harder. SO I learned my lesson.
  • Get false nails! Its alot harder to chew through Acrylic!
  • is this for a child or adult?
  • By putting oven mits on them.
  • Everytime you see one hammer it in.
  • I bit my nails for years and tried many many times to stop to no avail. Once I had my son I just stopped. I didn't have the desire to bite them anymore. It was weird, but great! Good luck. The worst time for me was when I was sitting in traffic in the car, it was so easy the cheat and nibble!
  • If you're so absorbed in nailbiting that you begin to do it subconsciously, a rubberband won't come in handy until you actually realize that you're biting. So ask friends and family to be on their guard for these times. You can't possibly eat your fingers when your hand keeps getting slapped away from your mouth.
  • Its all in the mind. Make up your mind and your strong will power can change any bad habit. You can reward your self every week on seeing the improvement.Se a goal and achieve it. This works for any thing under the sun. All the best
  • There's special polish out there that tastes bad. However, it didn't work for my daughter. I try and put "pretty" polish on her nails, and that works because she doesn't want to ruin them. as for me, it's my nervous habit. Sometimes I can stop myself, othertimes I can't.
  • you could try just regular nail polish or they have this clear stuff that i guess tastes really bitter or something you can find it at cvs in the beauty isle
  • Bribe yourself with something if you quit and every week treat yourself with something..and keep a rubberband to remember to remember.
  • I bite mine to, but when I itch my ear and forget about it and try to bite it, its really disgusting....find something that tastes like ear wax!
  • I have the same problem. Chewing gum seems to work sometimes or just keep busy so you dont have the chance to bite them. Usually stress attributes to nail biting as well.
  • Don't they make a nail polish that tastes horridly bad just for that? Maybe I dreamt it.
  • They make a nail polish that tastes AWFUL! Believe me, I've used it when i had that problem. Another way is to get one of those squishy stress-removal balls, not to remove stress but to keep your hands occupied! You could also ask you friends and family to tell you when you are biting your nails!
  • dip em' in hot sauce:)
  • Try to be more aware of when you are doing it. People usually do it sub-consciously. Every time you catch yourself, just say no and tell yourself how much it is a bad habit and you will stop. You do this enough and your bad habit will cease.
  • See a doctor! Be careful who's advice you take.
  • i wore acrylics for a few months while i was working and that caused me to stop after a lifetime of nailbiting.
  • Chrome plating. They can chrome just about anything.
  • Go to your local pet store and buy a product called "Bitter Apple". Put it on your nails and trust me the first taste will stop you from ever biting them again. Worked for me, broke my habit, and nail salons havent seen a dime of mine since!
  • Don't put them in your mouth lol.
  • keep your mouth full at all times.
  • have your hands tied behind your back
  • It is a bad habit and for the most done subconsciously, when you catch yourself doing it mentally rebuke yourself. If you try to do your best to have "nice" nails as well this may well help. On the other hand pay to have false nails and take care of them and by the time you have them removed you may very well be out of the habit because you have become accustomed to having "nice" ones you will take care of there after. It doe's work.
  • I had a guy say to me "I bet you can't stop biting your nails" And I actually did, after biting them 28 years. So let's try it :) "I bet you can't stop biting your nails " :) worked for me, worth a try. He was no more important in my life then I am in yours, so we can get you there :)

  • put somting that taste naty on then
  • Put something on them, that you don't like the taste of. :-)
  • To fall in love!!!
  • Bite down past the quick. :-0
  • It's not really as much a habit as a stress and boredom reducer, at least for me... I'm 53, and still do it when I'm waiting in the doctor's office, waiting for an interview, when they get a bit too long and I don't have clippers, etc. Once they're short, there's not much to bite. So if you keep them clipped... See http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/11192 for other's suggestions.

  • Keep your finger tips dirty, that way you won't want them in your mouth. Or maybe something spicy or something.
  • Paint your nails with something nasty tasting.
  • Will power. I find the best way to stop doing something is to just stop.
  • Tabasco sauce on your fingernails!
  • Just look at a fingernail under a microscope. That did it for me. It looks like a bunch of fat worms crowded together. Yuck!
  • chop off the ends of your fingers with an axe, works really well.
  • stick your fingers in something that you would not put into your mouth

  • Amputate your hands? Or rather, find something to occupy them for longer. Answerbag is a place to start.
  • Sit on your hands! Seriously get some of that vile tasting stuff that they make to stop people. Start painting your nails and making them look nice and put that horrid stuff over the top - if the fact that they are looking better doesn't stop you the taste might!
  • try putting it up your ass 'then it might not be good,
  • there are products available to help. Paint your nails with a clear liquid that dries and remains on the nail. When you bite the nails you encounter a very unpleasant taste -- so unpleasant that you stop biting and break the habit.
  • When ever you get the urge to bite them, just chew them, eventually hopefully you should stop getting the urge and stop biting them all together. That's how I stopped years ago. If it doesn't do anything, then there are products that you can put on your nails to make you want to stop
  • put vanilla extract on your finger nails , and the smell is great but the taste alone is horable :) repeat that every time you take a shower go swiming or wash your hands. it works !
  • I've always found that I have better luck not biting my nails when I have polish on them. When I have color on my nails I like the way it looks so much that I'm not even tempted to chew them! If you don't want colored polish on your nails, however, clear polish serves a similar purpose and tastes gross! My uncle quit biting his nails in a rather unconventional way. He said he just made a weird noise (like, "Waah!!") whenever he got his hand close to his mouth and it made him aware of what he was doing and distracted him from wanting to do it. Might not be the best solution in public, I suppose...lol
  • in winter (so u can cuva them up with gloves) put plasters on your fingertips, every time you go for a nibble you will get a mouthful of fabricy stuff.
  • There's a product called Stop and Grow or something, which is made to stop you biting your nail. It basically tastes really bad and is applied to your nail.
  • Quitting is the easy part. There are several methods mentioned here such as using rubber bands or awful tasting polish to stem initial biting attempts. Staying clean from a habit of many years is more difficult. Keeping nails groomed afterwards helps. To stay off biting, you have to understand what the triggers are that you use before you bite. Basically, you have to want to quit more than you want to bite. I wrote an ebook to help nail biters understand what they do before they bite that acts as the triggers. The book gives advice on how to train yourself to avoid biting once the trigger gets set. It follows with advice on how to maintain your non-biting habit and groom your nails. You can read more about it at: http://www.nailbinon.com. Because I believe it is the rare person who succeeeds on the first attempt, I also started a free community where nail biters can come and commiserate their problems and share their successes with one another. I trust they will give good advice on the best products, tools and techniques that helped them quit. The community is called Nail Biters Anonymous and it is at this address: http://www.nailbinonforum.com
  • Quinine, according to Aunt Pitty Pat
  • I was like this when I was younger. The pain on my nails were enough to stop, but I hear scraping soap under your nails works. It takes 21 days to break a habit, so focus on that. Good luck!
  • I used to bite my nails -- did it for about 25 years. I quit after I finished medical training and started a research fellowship. I had to spend day and night writing grants, and got so busy with my hands that I would forget to bite my nails. One day I woke up and realized I just didn't want to any more. Good luck!
  • painting your nails could work. clear nail polish
