Often, in my humble opinion, little or none .

Sociological research indicates that of the total value of crime involving money in the USA, roughly 10-15% is perpetrated by the people who make up over 85% of the country's prison population, having got caught holding up a 24/7 or similar.

The other 85-90% of the total value of monetary crime in the USA is tax, benefit and business fraud perpetrated by predominently white, middle class people. These people, should they be caught, will usually suffer far lesser sentences for crimes involving far greater amounts of money. Their time inside is likely to be easier too, but they would in no way categorize themselves as 'criminal'.

They are though, and very much so. True, they don't weild guns or knives, but they do cause massive misery, hopelessness, breakdowns (personal and business), suicides, and from behind the quiet respectability of their white picket fences they defraud the state of billions of dollars every year.

a criminal career is built on taking advantage of other people, breaking universally accepted rules of behavior and reaping the results of others hard work

a non-criminal career is built on being the best employee you can be, employer loyalty, working to get along and being able to adapt to the different roles and responsibilities handed you by your position

Experience, training, and duration - just like the difference between an amateur and a professional in any career.
