sounds like he has either advanced the timing too far or it has jumped timing stock it can only handle 12 degrees of advance would probably change the timing back and check or replace the timing chain.
Time for a good overall tuneup.Plugs,wires,distributor cap,check w/timing light.Clean fuel system,etc.
Chances are its jumped time and and its killing the performance and mileage.

my synchronizer in my 1991 ford mustang T-5 transmission is bad. It grinds in 3rd gear. Can I buy a rebuild kit and fix the problem?

You're reading I have a friend that has a 2004 ford mustang and its getting really bad gas miles and its a v8 4.3 and i think its the timing because its poping out the back and it back fire's some times when he starts it im not good with fords so if any body know
