It matters because this pretty much determines whether or not all of our efforts to survive and maintain our current status in our society/world/universe were even somewhat significant.

WHy wouldn't they be significant? Isn't it possible that we reside in the matrix--a perfect matrix--where the intellectuals recieve the greates schooling possible, and the less intelligant happen to labour dilligently at factories? And, if the illusion is undistinguishable from reality, why would it matter that we were being decieved?

It maters because Humans will always look for "truth" what ever that maybe.

If we were being deceived, then chances are that more than half of our ideals are incredible insignificant.

How much would racism, bigotry and other forms of hate measure up to the reality of a nuclear winter or something from some other alternate universe.

WHy would our ideas be insignificant?

Consider the following thought experiment:

1. Acknowleage that it is quite possible that we are already being decieved by decartes demon, or that we are in the matrix. So, it is possible that we are being decieved right now.

2. Now imagine that you are being 'decieved' by the hypothetical matrix or demon, to experiance extreme depression, which prevented you from ascomplishing what you wanted to ascomplish (calculus work, production of short stories, eccetera).

3. Now here comes the proposition: Some one offers you a chance to live in a world where reality is an illusion ( not your thoughts--but the external reality). Your thought would be able to devolop as they would normaly, assuming that you read literature and philosophy. And you would not be depressed, so you would, therefore be able to ascomplish those tasks that you wanted to ascomplished durring your decieved deppression.

It's highly plausible that that IS indeed our current situation.
Just like Plato's Allegory of the cave: There were prisoners chained in a cave, unable to turn their heads. All they could see is the wall of the cave and Behind them burnt a fire.

Between the fire and the prisoners there is a parapet, along which puppeteers can walk. The puppeteers, who are behind the prisoners, hold up puppets that cast shadows on the wall of the cave. The prisoners are unable to see these puppets, the real objects, that pass behind them. What the prisoners see and hear are shadows and echoes cast by objects that they do not see.

Such prisoners would mistake appearance for reality. They would think the things they see on the wall were real; they would know nothing of the real causes of the shadows.

Then one day one of these prisoners escapes, he makes it to the light and becomes blinded -so he turns back towards the darkness -but something drove him to go to the light. Although he couldn't see it at first, he slowly began to see it. Through the things the light had shown on to reflections until at last he could see.

Filled with such pride and enlightenment, he goes back to the cave in an effort to free and show the other prisoners what he's seen.
