  • Lightening is basically electricity looking for a way to the ground. Metal is the best conductor of charged energy, so it will likely hit something metallic that has the easiest path to the ground. Water is another good conductor, which is why they say not to swim during a storm.
  • Lightning takes the EASIEST path to the ground, not necessarily the shortest. If the EASIEST path (path of least resistance) leads through an object, tower, person, dog, mercedes benz, it will pass through that object. Usually it's an object that conducts electricty, though, since that will provide a path with less electrical resistance.
