The mineral fluorospar (which contains fluorine) was observed as early as 1530 as a substance that lowered the melting point of many minerals and metals when mixed with them. In other words it was (and is) used as a flux. It is especially useful in the production of aluminium which requires AL2O3 in the form of a molten mixture. The name fluorospar comes from the Latin word for "flow". When it was later discovered that fluorospar was a salt of fluorine the name was adapted for the gas F2.
