What is the fascination with books/movies about vampires? Blood-sucking other-worldly creatures who prey on humans...makes no sense to me. What is the attraction, the lure, the "hook"?

Vampires, in contrast to other "monsters", are very romantic. Whereas werewolves are vicious, mummies are creepy, zombies are fatal... vampires are typically portrayed as handsome men (or lovely women) in very classic clothing, well spoken and intelligent, and their bite is a very intimate thing (nibbling on the neck, something most people associate with sexuality), as well as the ultimate exchange in sharing blood.

In the whole "Twilight" series, which is big right now, it's the lure, for teenage girls, of a handsome guy who's "untouchable" in the respect that his whole family never has friends or falls in love. Then the lead, Bella, *does* get this handsome guy to fall for her, and he's noble, chivalrous, soft-spoken, intelligent, exciting, and willing to reveal his ultimate secret because he trusts her with it. He's willing, even, to die for her if need be, to protect her from a monsterous vampire who considers humans as nothing but food.

    Hope that helps!

I really don't know. I've never found vampires to be scary at all. They are hokey and goofy and make me laugh.

A few critical articles that I've read draw a link between vampirism and sex. Descriptions of vampire attacks are usually quite sexualized, as a vampire bite evokes an orgasmic response in the victim. Reading vampire literature and playing vampire RPG provides a "safe" sexual outlet for those who are afraid of sexual interaction for whatever reason.
