  • Frequent waterchanges, replacing a third of the tank water with "old" water (fresh tap water can contain unwanted chemicals, ususally leaving the water in a bucket for a day helps to get rid of those)twice a week. Prevent tehe buildup of ammonia by feeding less, the ammonia is formed by bacteria from fishpoo and uneaten food. If you use an aquariumvacuumcleaner to clean theh gravel while taking out hte water to be replaced, you'll kill two birds with one stone. You can build your own from a plastic botle and a hose, the bigger the space in the bottle compared to the hose, the smaller the particles that will be left behind (sand). You use it as a siphon, the poo goes up the hose, in the bucket and the sand/gravel falls back down. The picture is of a shopbought model but the principle should be clear.
