  • Not for me, but I own guns.
  • It all depends who picks you up. It's like playing russian roulette - so yes, I suppose it can be as dangerous as people make it out to be. Serial killers prefers prostitutes, but will kill a runaway or a hitchhiker in a pinch.
  • It's one of those things that people LOVE to make out to be a guaranteed raped and/or dead situation. Of course it is HIGHLY dangerous simply because you have NO idea who the person is that your getting into a car with, you are totally entrusting them with your life, and by getting into that car you are putting them in 100% control of the situation. Can I, or anyone, say that it is absolutely guaranteed that you will be in danger...no, but where is important enough to go that you are willing to put your life in the hands of a total stranger to get there?
  • Yes! It's like Clair already said, like russian roulette. When I was younger I used to hitchhike quite a lot. I had a couple of bad experiences that where close escapes for me. A friend of mine came off worse. She got raped and nearly killed. There are many nutters in the world and you make yourself very vulnerable by giving them the chance to be with you in a car where they have all the control to begin with. Just check out some internet stories about people getting raped, killed or abducted and ask yourself if you want to take the risk. I have to admit that I also had some great experiences with hitchhiking, I've met some great people, but to me, the risk is just far to big.
  • No, but do you want to be one of unlucky ones? How can you guarantee that you won't.
  • Like asking are plane crashes as dangerous as people make them out to be. Nothing bad usually happens but can and when it does.. tis terrible.
  • It depends where you are. Here in Bulgaria is very safe but there are a lot of sick people in other places
  • Yes. You may be lucky and never meet a nutjob but if you do you are not going to have a fun day. And, there are way to many nutcases driving around looking for hitchhikers. It has gotten steadily worse over the years. But, it is definitely not a good idea.
  • Like everything in life, risk is relative. Dangerous compared to what? There is an element of danger wheneer you interact with strangers in isolated circumstances. How much danger is dependent upon a lot of variables, the most important of which is who picks you up. While the risk is low, the fact remains that hitchhiking puts a person in a poor position to defend themself and an even worse position with respect to getting help, since nobody knows where you're at.
  • Yes. Don't go down that route. Rape is not as uncommon as one would think as so many are unreported, nor are people with mental illnesses and in this economic climate there will be many more people out for money too. Have I painted a gloomy enough picture or shall I continue? Good luck!:)
  • It would be kind of exciting - but then I never have and never had any bad experiences like that
  • Never in a million years would I do that. It can be.
  • Depends on the country and the person you lick up and even who you are.
  • all depends on where and the temperature and climate and the weather
  • It's like "Russian Roulette"... a game I am not willing to partake in.
  • No not if you are careful. I've hichhike my self across amarica several times. Of the thousand or so rides I gotten zero of them had any intent to harm me, only a handfull have been under the influance of drugs, I've never been robbed and only one minnor auto accident that was not the driver who pick me ups fault. The biggest risk to hichhiking is being harrassed by the police even if you are obiding by the law, however; if you know the the law and respectfully stand up for your self it's not a big problem either. This is real experiance from a hichhiker however I am a able bodied man about 6 foot tall. you may find it's more dangerous for you.
  • For women, yes. For men, not so much but still not a safe thing. For the people who pick up hitchhikers, see above.
  • I spent a great deal of my youth hitch hiking all over the US from about 1979 through around 1985 or thereabouts and got beat up once, shot at once and some turd tried to rape me once, but he's no longer walking among the living. All in all it's fairly safe. The real danger is from police who just love to hassle hitch hikers.. and getting stuck in really bad parts of town so no...it's not NEARLY as dangerous as it's made out to be, but far more boring than anyone ever thinks standing on the side of the road watching people reach over and lock their doors driving at 80 mph.. AS IF a hitch hiker is gonna stop a speeding car with their bare hands.
  • I picked up a hitch hiker, apparently he had just gotten out of jail, This worried me but he was very polite and gave me money for gas
  • Those who say they would never hitch hike.. what IF your car broke down in the middle of nowhere and you were broke and 200 miles from the nearest town in the dead of winter? Gonna walk the whole way? I doubt it..
  • I could tell ya' a coupla' harrowing tales. But they were few and far between - and I've hitch-hiked lots as a kid. ;-)
