  • I've heard bad things about that. You are not equal there. I've heard the men change once they get you there, because they have to keep face amongst their people and their ways. But if youre a strong woman go for it. They need to see what a strong inteligent woman is all about. The more this happens the better things get. Hopefully Indias women will stand someday.
  • Based on my own experience (I'm European background, married to a South Indian man very happily for five years now, lived in India near his relatives for two of those) I believe you can have a very good life. Yes, in many areas of India and among some of his relatives, you may find severe attitudes toward women, and toward people of different ethnicity; I have, but found that I could mostly deal with it the same way you would with most in-law issues, by a mixture of tolerance and flexibility on my part, combined with standing firm on the issues that were really important to me. Also, it is not hard to find a great support network of Indian women; I have made some wonderful friends among my husbands's relatives and friends. Life is changing fast for women in India. In some ways, I found much worse attitudes toward women in the south of my own country; as a teenager I lived in Alabama for several years, and believe me you can find some super-restrictive attitudes about women there. One last bit of advice: do all you can to learn about the local culture, speak your husband's family's local language at least passably well. If you love him, go for it!
  • It can go either way, depending on the neighborhood and the clannish nature of the family and friends. Some are one way and others another. I'd be more concerned about living in India. It's a huge adjustment (especially if you are American) and if you haven't spent extended time there, I would suggest trying a year before you cut all ties. Good luck.
