Jet aircraft mechanics wearing ear protectors are able to converse with each other because the ear protectors block out the sound of the jet engine. What physics concept would account for this?

    Sound dampening material inside the ear protectors filters and cancels sound waves. This uses the physics of attenuation to reduce sound energy.

    Back in my aerospace engineering days, I used to design noise suppression panels and turning vanes for post-overhaul jet engine test facilities (somewhat little larger than ear plug or muffs).
